My Goals 2016

This is were it all began. This photo. Taken last summer in August 2015 while on vacation. It was during that Golden Hour when the sun is slowly settling. I didn’t know it when I took it, but this photo would be the game changer.

Sunset in Quebec City down at the board walk beside the Chateau Laurier.

I came home and quickly did a few adjustments in Lightroom. I wasn’t sure how to process photos and this was just the beginning of the learning. But it was people’s reaction to it that shocked me. I posted it on my social media sites and many people were awing over it. I thought they were just being polite, nice to the newbie. I kept looking at it and I just couldn’t SEE it. I truly believed they were placating me.

You see, it had only been about 6 weeks before, that I had even started with photography. Sue reminded me of the number of times, I had sat in front of the computer, cursing, swearing and/or crying, as yet again, I was deleting Lightroom from my computer only to start over again. I just didn’t understand it. I remember other times, temper flaring in frustration, anger and defeat, as I’d scream from behind the monitor “How can I even process a photograph when I don’t know what a good photograph is supposed to look like!”

But when I entered that photo in the September contest with the Scarborough Camera Club and it received a gold rating, no one was more surprised than I. And I still couldn’t SEE it.

So my journey has been mainly about learning composition. Interspersed with post-processing, which was rather easy to learn. You see, I had to learn to post-process around and to cover up all the compositional mistakes I was making! Along the way, there has been on-line courses, club demonstrations and workshops. I’ve ate, breathed and drank everything photography. Even when at work, when I get a break, I peruse the photo sites, Flickr,  500px, and the overwhelming talent displayed on 1X. I know this has helped as I have been getting better at this. I’m able to think more about the shot while looking through the viewfinder and make corrections in real time. I’m visualizing my end product when I first sit down to start the post-processing. I sometimes even produce something I think of as a ‘good’ photo. And yet, I still can’t SEE what the IT is in THAT photo.

So, my goals are to stretch that creative eye, develop it fully. To see the things my friends take photos of that I overlook. I realized, I have a lot of lofty goals right now, but I am enthused. No, I’m passionately on fire for this!
